There are many types of hybrid step motors available, each with different phases and angles. Each one has its own advantages, which are more suited for specific applications. This motor is known for its combination of speed, torque and accuracy. Drives for 2 phase motors are common because of their large volumes. The motor will move in full steps. The motor may produce a distinct sound when it is stepped at different speeds. It can vibrate or resonate at certain speeds. For most applications, this is not an issue. Motors can be controlled using micro-stepping drives to smoothen motor torque if this is an issue. Programming the drive can often avoid resonance speeds.

Two phase 0.9-degree step motors and three phase 1.5 degree motors are available for applications that require greater accuracy or smoother movement. This motor has the exact same drive as the 1.8 degree motor. These motors must have a step speed that is twice that of a 1.8-degree motor to achieve the same speed. A higher step rate results in lower torque at high speeds. For many applications, high speed is not necessary. However, higher voltage drives are available to increase torque at high speeds.

There are two phases of stepper motors: a 2 phase and a 3 phase motor. They can be used at 0.9, 1.2, or 1.8 degree angles. Security cameras are a good example of an application for the 0.9degree motors. These motors enable the camera to move precisely without vibration. These motors are small and encapsulated, which reduces the camera package size and allows for outdoor use. A 3 phase drive is required for 3 phase motors. This drive must be different from the one used for 2 phase motors. The low speed torque is slightly lower than the 1.8 degree motors. Fortunately, design improvements have reduced this difference. You can get comparable high speed torque. For maximum torque, three-phase motors in size 24 are also available with PowerPlus technology. Three phase motors can be used wherever maximum performance and quiet, precise movement are required. Performance lighting is an example of a great application for three-phase motors. These spotlight lights require quick movement and quiet operation to not disrupt the performance.
